Dikes of Courage In The Dark: An MLK Jnr. Insight.

On Friday I got the kids from aftercare and while we debated on what we wanted for dinner, my daughter blurted out. “Mommy it’s Martin Luther King Day on Monday and we don’t go to school.” I confirmed her statement and informed her and her brother that I had enough snacks to tide us over, all the goodies they liked. After they hollered in gratitude, an awkward silence fell over all of us. Then my daughter spoke again “I think we owe him something., In fact I know we owe him something.”

I sighed and explained, he has a National holiday and we could so some volunteer work. While her and her brother debated, I contemplated her statement and how I was feeling about the current state of the country. If Dr. King Jr was here today, would he be happy or sad. It’s as though we have regressed as a nation and as humanity.

Subsequently I thought about our sojourn here on earth. As the body of Christ, we were instructed to let our light shine. However I feel, rather I know like my daughter expressed, we as Christians are gradually dimming in the darkness of the world. Don’t we owe God more than that? Our faith and hope in Him are a response to His love. However in times of fear or uncertainty are we responding appropriately?  We are called to be witnesses and glorify God in all we do but when waves of uncertainty arise, do we stand strong and glow in His promise or cower to fear and dim the light that is supposed to shine?

This excerpt I found from Dr. King Jnr.’s sermon Antidotes of Fear expressed my sentiments exactly.

Courage faces fear and thereby masters it. Cowardice represses fear and is thereby mastered by it. Courageous men never lose the zest for living even through their life situation is zestless; cowardly men, overwhelmed by the uncertainties of life, lose the will to live. We must constantly build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear.” DR. Marin Luther King Jnr.

We are told countless times in the Bible not to be afraid. We are promised that the Lord our God will not forsake us. Be are also told to be courageous. Therefore #InTheDark areas of life, build your confident expectations on the promises of God. That alone will hold back the flood of fear and give you what is needed to move forward in spite of what you see. Despite our detours or turbulence we must continue to each day “build dikes of courage to hold back fear” by holding on and embracing our season.

Abraham had a 25 year detour.
Paul had a 3 year detour
The Israelites had a 40 year detour.
I could go on and on…
Do you stop to imagine what would’ve happened if they’d left the race midway? On the road to destiny dark moments are a necessity. Fix your eyes on Him in confident expectation of good things to come.

#MotivationMonday:He Won’t Take It Back

Hey there! Seems like it’s been ages. How is everyone doing on this Monday morning. Can I be real? I’m tired. LOL. The past few weeks I’ve been on a roller coaster ride. Well it’s always like that the first couple of weeks of the year but I’m still not used to it. See I do tax prep for my day job and it’s a pretty big deal. Coupled with the fact that I had to finish the manuscript for my upcoming book HE CHANGED MY NAME..phew!Well both are done by God’s grace and I can breathe again.

The gifts of God are irrevocableRomans 11-29

How are your goals going for the month. Please tell me you made goals and not resolutions…LOL. If you haven’t made goals, it’s not too late to do them. Sometimes we feel that we have wasted a lot of time and it is too late to start. But it’s never too late to use the gifting and walk in the purpose God has called you to.

The other day I picked up my shoe to gently nail in a tack to the wall to hang a picture. My footwear didn’t automatically stop being footwear because I used it as a hammer. Neither did the hammer lose its ability to be a hammer because I didn’t use it.

If you aren’t using them yet, your gifts still lie dormant within you. The gifts and calling God gives us are without repentance. He doesn’t change His mind because we are disobedient or delayed. He will not take your gift away if you don’t use them but make no mistake, He does expect us to be faithful and fruitful.

So don’t wait another minute to stir up your gifts and begin developing strategies on how to use them to give God a return on His investment. If you want to walk out God’s plan for your life, it’s time to stir up that gift within you!

Be Blessed.

The Preferred Blue Print

lifepurposeI’ve been studying the book of Ephesians this month. I know there are only a few chapters but I am studying not just reading. And I’ve been in chapter 4 for a couple of days now and I am stuck in there. And I wanna tell you the reason why I find the chapter so inspiring…

I have said this so many times before, if you do not know your calling, for develop your passion and it will lead you there. You don’t have a choice on whether to do this or not because on no account should your life be made up of random, unorganized tasks each day. Your purpose, your calling gives your life meaning.

In Ephesians 4, Paul advises us to walk, better still run toward our calling…  “In light of all this, here’s what I want you to do. While I’m locked up here, a prisoner for the Master, I want you to get out there and walk—better yet, run!—on the road God called you to travel. I don’t want any of you sitting around on your hands. I don’t want anyone strolling off, down some path that goes nowhere. And mark that you do this with humility and discipline—not in fits and starts, but steadily, pouring yourselves out for each other in acts of love, alert at noticing differences and quick at mending fences.”

With that in mind, what goals have you set for yourself to do this?  I love late Dr. Munroe’s definition of goals,”they form the preferred flight plan to the desired destination(purpose).” He also said “They are those things that create your priorities, determine your decisions, dictate your companions and predict choices.”

Once you wake up everyday, what you give focus to, the decisions you make, those you hang out with and the choice you make should all center around what God has called you to do. It’s serious business.

I want to remind you today, it’s never to late to start living in your calling. For those of you who are, during your race, keep persevering. We can’t achieve our calling by stepping over people…we run this race in obedience with humility, love, discipline and forgiveness.

So from the beginning of the year until now, how are you doing? Are you running towards your calling everyday?

Be Blessed

Who Is Rolling The Stone

Hi there! Today, I have the extreme pleasure of introducing to you a lady I simply call “sis”. Her name is Thecla and she is the face, voice and mastermind behind “Ds Favored Woman.” Boy does she have a word for you today!! Read and be blessed.

Who Is Rolling The Stone….

“And when the Sabbath was past (that is, after the sun had set), Mary Magdalene, and Mary (the mother) of James, and Salome purchased sweet-smelling spices, so that they might go and anoint (Jesus body).

And very early on the first day of the week they came to the tomb; (by then) the sun had risen.

And they said to one another, who will roll back the stone for us out of (the groove across the floor at) the door of the tomb?

And when they looked up, they (distinctly) saw that the stone was already rolled back, for it was very large.”

Mark 16:1-4 (AMP)

This morning, my 7-year old daughter was telling me the story of Judas betrayal the way she understood it, then she asked me to continue telling the story. (Now I think about it, I just realize that I was conned into telling the whole story, but it’s always worth it. Lol).

I told her about the last supper, the ultimate betrayal, the crucifixion and of course the resurrection.

As I told the story of how these women (who had such a deep responsibility for the welfare of Jesus ministry) set out to anoint the body of Jesus who they believed was still lying in the tomb, I was also being taught in my spirit some lessons to take away from this story.

Watching the crucifixion of the one they called Lord was painful beyond words. Jesus had been everything to them. They watched in horror as He was mocked, flogged, tortured and hung on the cross, and it hurt even more knowing that there was nothing they could do to stop the Roman soldiers from torturing him.

After the crucifixion, the disciples of Jesus stayed holed up because it was a very confusing time for them and they didn’t know what to do next, but these women out of a deep sense of love and responsibility refused to let the fear of the possible dangers (dressed in military uniforms) outside their secured zone keep them from going to anoint Jesus body.

The first thing these women did was to purchase sweet smelling spices. My take away here is that in our everyday life we all have different callings and responsibilities and no calling is without roadblocks both mental and structural.

Mental roadblocks could be in the form of the fear of plunging into unsafe territory, for example you get an idea to invent something new and while everything in your head is telling you “it can’t be done” or “you have absolutely no experience for this”, you cant shake away that deep burning desire in you that urges you to step out of your comfort zone

The structural roadblocks could be an angry mob of Pharisees waiting outside your house or in this case a really huge rock blocking the entrance to their destination!

1.These women went out to purchase the supplies they needed.

What is that responsibility that God has given to you? Have you gone to the market to purchase the supplies you need or did you go to the market to window shop and check the prices and walk around the market some more to see what other people are buying?

The thing about walking around the market without a list is that you lose focus and get distracted!

We have all been put on earth with various gifts and talents, with different assignments and responsibilities.

Sometimes we know our gifts, and feel the tug of responsibility pointing us in the direction of our destiny but we are too afraid to move because we are stuck counting the cost of moving!

These women got everything they needed for the job of anointing Jesus body and started the journey to the tomb.

Now you might be inclined to think they didn’t know there was a huge rock blocking the entrance of the tomb, but if you read the previous chapter, you will find out that these women followed the body to see where they lay Him, they waited and watched to be sure that he had finally been put to rest before they left. They saw with their own eyes the huge rock placed before the tomb to prevent anyone from getting in. So make no mistake about it, they knew the size of the rock or roadblock in their path.

2.The second thing I notice here was that they didn’t talk about the “roadblock” until they were well into the thick of the journey.

I like to look at it like they got everything they needed and left and sought solutions on the journey.

In business or any other creative pursuit, you can’t afford to sit and wait until you have acquired all the skills and training before you move. You move with the skills and gifts you already have and look for solutions as you continue on your way. There will always be new things to learn.

Ecclesiastes 11:4 – “He who observes the wind (and waits for all conditions to be favorable) will not sow, and he who regards the clouds will not reap”.  (AMP)

3. The third thing I noticed here was that the women looked up!

For me looking up represents having faith that everything will work out better than I hoped.

In our business and creative pursuits, looking up represents holding on to hope and waiting for the right opportunity to present itself.

I recently watched the autobiography of the African-American gold medal artistic gymnast Gabby Douglas and something stood out for me.

In the movie, she reveals how early in life she knew she wanted to compete in the Olympics but even with her talents, there were massive roadblocks in front of her. One of them was that the coach she wanted to train with lived hundreds of miles away and her mother didn’t know that was going to work out. Gabby kept her eyes on what she wanted and hoped beyond hope for something to happen while she went for her usual training in her old gym class.

Then at the right time, an opportunity presented itself as a family that wanted to host her so she could move closer to her dream coach and pursue her dream.

At the right time!!

If the women had come to anoint the body 2 days early, the rock would still have been there and the soldiers guarding the tomb would have chased them away.

Opportunity presents itself most times to those on the path of their destiny as a rolled away stone.

In the midst of life’s challenges, I want you to be sure of one thing, God is watching over you and His grace is available to start you on the path, keep you in the race and help you finish strong.
