So yesterday, along with many other people, (official numbers are not out yet) I watched With This Ring on Lifetime. The movie was your typical girlfriend movie. It was based off a novel The Vow. I haven’t read the book but I loved the movie. I love good romance and a great story but it resonated with me for another reason…
The main characters issues, were the same issues the heroine of my debut novel, An Unexpected Blessing had. They needed to get married. Sooner rather than later. The difference between Trista (the main character in With This Ring) and Feranmi (my heroine in An Unexpected Blessing) is that fact that the pressure to get married was self imposed by Trista meanwhile Feranmi’s pressure was put on by her parents.
Her parents were making a surprise visit to the US and she needed a pretend boyfriend to get them off her back. So she turned to her best friend Ini who owns a dating agency. Just like the Trista in the movie With This Ring, Feranmi went on a number of frustrating dates before Alex came to her rescue.

Feranmi’s phone rang. It was probably Ini calling to find out how the date went. She secured the satin scarf on her head and went in search of her phone. She was right, it was Ini. Feranmi answered the phone, placed it between her shoulder and ear, picked up the empty glass on her nightstand and made her way to the kitchen.
“Hey, girl, how did it go? Ini asked.
“It was terrible. The guy was rude, pompous, and he believed in a higher power. Can you believe it …a higher power?” Feranmi paused to let Ini’s laughter subside. She was glad someone was having a nice time. “It’s not funny.”
“Calm down, Fera. Your folks aren’t here yet. You still have time, besides…”
“Besides, what?” Feranmi asked when she sensed Ini’s hesitation.
“At the risk of you biting my head off, I was gonna say besides your buddy, Alex, is back in town. He could always help out.”
“That’s out of the question. Please find me another date,” Feranmi snapped. She couldn’t imagine asking Alex to stand in as her man. There was unfinished business between them that she had no intention of finishing. It wouldn’t be fair to him or her. They both knew the way they left things. She had spent the last four years trying to get over him. But apparently that didn’t happen, because ever since they ran into each other, he had constantly invaded her thoughts.
