An Unexpected Blessing ~ An Excerpt

coverblogSo yesterday, along with many other people, (official numbers are not out yet) I watched With This Ring on Lifetime. The movie was your typical girlfriend movie. It was based off a novel The Vow. I haven’t read the book but I loved the movie. I love good romance and a great story but it resonated with me for another reason…

The main characters issues, were the same issues the heroine of my debut novel, An Unexpected Blessing had. They needed to get married. Sooner rather than later. The difference between Trista (the main character in With This Ring) and Feranmi (my heroine in An Unexpected Blessing) is that fact that the pressure to get married was self imposed by Trista meanwhile Feranmi’s pressure was put on by her parents.

Her parents were making a surprise visit to the US and she needed a pretend boyfriend to get them off her back. So she turned to her best friend Ini who owns a dating agency. Just like the Trista in the movie With This Ring, Feranmi went on a number of frustrating dates before Alex came to her rescue.

Feranmi’s  phone rang. It was probably Ini calling to find out how the date went. She secured the satin scarf on her head and went in search of her phone. She was right, it was Ini. Feranmi answered the phone, placed it between her shoulder and ear, picked up the empty glass on her nightstand and made her way to the kitchen.

“Hey, girl, how did it go? Ini asked.

“It was terrible. The guy was rude, pompous, and he believed in a higher power. Can you believe it …a higher power?” Feranmi paused to let Ini’s laughter subside. She was glad someone was having a nice time. “It’s not funny.”

“Calm down, Fera. Your folks aren’t here yet. You still have time, besides…”

“Besides, what?” Feranmi asked when she sensed Ini’s hesitation.

“At the risk of you biting my head off, I was gonna say besides your buddy, Alex, is back in town. He could always help out.”

“That’s out of the question. Please find me another date,” Feranmi snapped. She couldn’t imagine asking Alex to stand in as her man. There was unfinished business between them that she had no intention of finishing. It wouldn’t be fair to him or her. They both knew the way they left things. She had spent the last four years trying to get over him. But apparently that didn’t happen, because ever since they ran into each other, he had constantly invaded her thoughts.

Hi there! After a first draft, revisions, developmental edits, rewrites and three self edits….I’m 95% done with A Scoop Of Love. Yay! This is the first installment of the Sons of Ishmael series. I’m so excited about this series. It’s been on my mind since I penned The Christmas Ultimatum last year and I’m thrilled I’ll soon be able to release it. Pre orders would begin in next month…Enjoy this synopsis and excerpt.

Scoop of Love coverSynopsis:

The oldest of the Danjuma brothers, Rasheed was a self-made man. He’d learned at an early age that love and commitment brought with it complications he didn’t want to deal with. His single-minded focus had paid off. Rasheed was able to step into the shoes of his absentee father by taking care of his mother and twin brothers. But just when he thought he could stop carrying the weight of his family on his shoulders, he gets a call that could change the trajectory of his life.
Ibiso Jaja, a professional caterer, had gambled on the love of a man and lost. Through the redeeming love of God, she had picked herself up and was now living her dream as the owner of Bisso Bites, a bistro in the heart of Abuja. However circumstances conspire to threaten the bistro and bring her face to face with the type of man she has vowed to avoid. The attraction is instant.
Once again, Rasheed is forced to do something he has done all his life – put the needs of his family ahead of his own. This time however, he crosses path with the sassy, independent, Jesus-loving caterer who is bent on making him see the power of forgiveness and God’s love. Just when Rasheed lets his guard down, a deadly sabotage causes old demons to rise. Will Rasheed continue to pursue power and success or surrender to the light of God’s love?

Partially Edited Excerpt:

Rasheed’s mother slowly stood. He saw the look she gave him and knew that she was angry at his outburst. Right now, he couldn’t care less. He would pacify his mother later but first he wanted to know what these people were doing here.

“I ask again what are…”

“Rasheed, that’s enough.” His mother stepped down the step that elevated the dining area. She walked toward the visitors.

Rasheed shoved his hands in his pockets. His jaw set in anger but he remained quiet in respect of his mother. He stood by as Halima—his half-sister and his father’s other wife greeted his mother

“Hello Aisha, what are you doing here?” his mother asked calmly.

“I didn’t mean to intrude but I need to talk to you and Rasheed,” Aisha said.

“Nkechi, please get us drinks. We’ll be in the other living room,” Rasheed’s mother instructed. She then ushered the ladies out of the dining room.

“Bros, don’t allow these people to make you so angry,” Kamir said. He dug into his second helping of moi-moi.

“I agree besides you’re scaring our guest,” Jabir nodded in Ibiso’s direction.

Rasheed opened his mouth to speak when his focus shifted to his mother who re entered the room.

“I hope you’ve found your manners?” she asked Rasheed.

Rasheed paused for a moment. “Mama, I’m sorry. I just don’t want them here.”

“The last I checked, this was my house. Now act like you have some good home training and come join us. They really want to talk to you,” she said and retreated the way she came.
