Unoma & Friends Presents (1)
Perfect Imperfections by Melinda Michelle

The holidays are here!!! I know I’m not alone in this, but this is my favorite time of year. Every single season I look forward to the sounds, the lights, the scents and my taste buds jump at the anticipation of those holiday dinners. I can sum up the holidays in one word – family. Let me tell you about my perfectly imperfect family. We are loud, we travel in packs and when we get together all we do is laugh – hard!
I look forward to the hardcore arguments over a game of Phase 10 or Uno and getting yelled at for sneaking food before it’s time. If we are traveling, my dad will be fussing at me and the way I drive. I don’t like the way he drives and vice versa. I hate following him and he hates following me, but in all these years it never occurred to us to let somebody else drive. I guess that argument has just become a tradition we don’t want to let go of.
Whenever I’m home, I always stay at my brother’s house, because my mom’s house is too loud and I like to sleep in. We will find new ways to aggravate each other just because we’re siblings and that’s what we’re supposed to do no matter how old we are. I still owe him for waking me with an air horn that one year. Classic family stories will be told for the thousandth time, but I will still laugh until I cry. I look forward to telling my parents to get a room because no one wants to see that, while secretly adoring that they are still very much in love.
Funnily enough, all of this is for Thanksgiving, but when Christmas rolls around, it just doubles the fun. The first time the radio plays Donny’s “This Christmas” I’m in full on holiday mode. Nothing says Merry Christmas like The Temptations crooning my absolute favorite version of “Silent Night.” And even though I have yet to know “What the Lonely Do at Christmas,” I look forward to The Emotions continuously asking me the question. My favorite holiday tradition is me and my sister-in-law staying up all night on Christmas Eve wrapping presents and laughing until we cry which causes some of the wrapping to be really jacked up.
The amazing thing about this time of year is even though you pile on new memories, it never diminishes the old ones or stops you from traveling back in time to relive those precious moments with the ones you love. Nothing beats family and as crazy as they are, I wouldn’t trade them for all the sanity in the world.

Season’s Greetings to All,
Melinda Michelle

  1. Your family sounds so much like mine, Melinda! Lots of laughs, good-natured arguments (although ours are mostly about “the Church” and whether we’re team iPhone or android) and crazy family traditions. I’m so thankful for my family year around, but I give extra thanks at the holidays!

    1. Girl I know right! I love my family and this past Thanksgiving we had so much fun it was stupid! I enjoy the holidays more because my time with them in super extended. The arguments tickle my soul!

  2. I want to thank you ladies for participating. You each get one copy of Michelle’s book and the $5 Amazon gift card goes to Deborah. See you again next week. Sherell, please contact me for your prize.

  3. The Temptations have the best rendition of Silent Night by far!!!! I need to FaceTime and be apart of your holiday celebrations. I can only imagine the amount of fun.

    1. The BEST EVER!!!! Man we play that song ad nauseum. You know that’s a great idea…I may have to bring you guys in on the fun. Then y’all will know why I’m such a nut! It’s hereditary. LOL

  4. I love Christmas, Melinda’s family sounds a lot like mine. My sister and I are Hallmark channel junkies this time of year.

    1. If my family isn’t being loud or acting crazy then it’s just not normal. My favorite Christmas movies are “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.” I’m gonna have to try and check out some Hallmark movies this year.

    1. Thank you! That song is the epitome of the holidays for me. I love how music can take you anywhere you want to go.
