Why I’m Still a Paperback Girl in a Digital World

Hey there, friend.

I’ll be the first to admit it, I love the convenience of ebooks. Carrying a whole library around in my purse still feels a little like magic, and I’d never give that up. Pssst: I just got a Paper White Kindle

But if I’m being honest? Paperbacks still have my whole heart.

I think it’s because a paperback feels less like a transaction and more like an invitation. You don’t just read a paperback. You live with it. It rides along in your handbag and waits on your nightstand. It sits patiently on the kitchen table while the kettle heats up. And long after you’ve turned the last page, it’s still right there within reach…a quiet little reminder of the story and the way it made you feel.

Some of my favorite books look downright worn out, and I love them all the more for it. Creased spines. Dog-eared corners (don’t make that face…I use bookmarks now). Notes scribbled in the margins in my own messy handwriting. They’re not pristine. They’re loved. And isn’t that the whole point?

Honestly, I think that’s why I still write with paperback readers in mind.

The women who pick up my books aren’t speed-reading them on a crowded commute. They’re stealing quiet moments in the middle of full, busy lives: reading after church, after a long shift, after everyone else has finally gone to bed. They’re looking for stories that leave them with a little more hope, a little more faith, and a gentle reminder that love is always worth believing in.

And I’ll tell you, there’s nothing quite like imagining one of my books finding a real home. Not just glowing on a screen for a weekend, but tucked onto a shelf, sitting shoulder to shoulder with other beloved stories, waiting to be picked up and read all over again.

That might be my very favorite thing to hear from readers: that they came back to a book years later and it met them in a brand-new way. The words on the page hadn’t changed a bit—but they had. That’s the quiet magic of a good story, isn’t it?
