Damisi blinked a couple of times, reassuring herself this wasn’t a dream. She then lifted her finger to her ear and pressed against it. It wasn’t stuffed up. Jabir stood in front of her, his expression blank as though he hadn’t asked her to turn her world upside down.

“What?” she asked. She couldn’t have heard right.

“I asked you to marry me.”

“More like commanded,” she retorted.

“Do you want me to kneel? I can, but I think we’re past that stage.”  His eyes travelled to her stomach.

“Are you insane?”

“Why? Because I want to marry the soon-to-be mother of my child?” Jabir countered.

She folded her arms across her chest and walked past him. She sat on the bay window and stared into the darkness of the night. She was tired. This was all too much for her. How could one slip-up have so many repercussions?

Jabir walked up beside her and leaned with one shoulder against the windowsill. Beats of silence passed between them.

She looked at him. “You’re suggesting I marry you out of obligation?”

He shrugged. “Would it be that much of a sacrifice?”

Her eyes widened. “Are you kidding me?”

She couldn’t believe he was acting so nonchalantly—like it was no big deal. Their relationship had failed, so what made him think a marriage wouldn’t?

“All you have to do is view it as a business transaction.” He smiled.

“With no expiration date?”

“Who says? That can be arranged, but this time I’d have some notice. You won’t be able to pull your disappearing act because you would belong to me.” Jabir winked.

Damisi seethed. She had never met a more arrogant and cocky man.

“You are the most—” She bit down on her lip.

“Easy now. I know for a fact that babies can hear even in the womb. Watch what you say about its father.” He smirked.

“Is this a game to you?” she sighed.

“A game? A game? Do I look like I’m playing?” Jabir paced before her.

She knew he was trying to control his temper, but she wasn’t bothered. Let him get mad and leave. Just leave her alone.

“I don’t play games. You do.” His fiery gaze darkened his eyes.

His accusation hurt. Damisi waved her hand wearily. “I can’t rehash this now. We buried the past for six years. Why now?”

“You’re carrying my child. That’s why.” He paused. “I was so eager to be done when you left me in that hotel room. I refuse to be the forbidden toy you toss aside when your Christian conscience kicks in.”

“And I refuse to be with a man who knows nothing about loyalty and commitment.” She trembled on the verge of tears.

“Accuse me of anything, but while we were together I was committed to you. You left!”
