Forming New Habits In 2016 Featuring Detola Amure

Wow… we made it to the last day of the year. Today for me is a day of reflection and planning. Time waits for no one so I always hit the ground running on day one. There are somethings I want to drop and some I want to pickup. I want to share some good habits with you so I invited my dear friend and sister from across the pond to help me out..She is a super working mom extraordinaire, Detola Amure. See what she got to say….

Forming New Habits in 2016

Compliments of the season dear friends. I know that a lot of people are in reflection mode as we round up 2015. I also believe that a number of us are looking to achieve more success in 2016 at home, relationships, business, career, relationships etc.

John Maxwell once said: “If I could come to your house and spend just one day with you, I would be able to tell whether or not you will be successful”. See, habits are the things we do on a daily basis and our habits determine if our lives will be successful or not.

If you want to be successful, here are 3 new habits I recommend you start forming as we approach the new year:

Habit 1- Think Positively
What we think eventually becomes a reality in our lives. So if we keep thinking about failure or lack we will attract more of that into our lives. Anyone who wants to be successful has to make a conscious effort to think positive thoughts.
The Bible tells us what should constitute our thought life. Whatever we think MUST be:
excellent and
worthy of praise

One way to get rid of negative thoughts and refocus your thoughts is to SPEAK out loud something that matches any of the above. Speak out something “true”, “lovely”, “admirable” or “worthy of praise” etc. When you say something out loud you automatically stop thinking. Try it and see.

Habit 2 – Be Thankful
Instead of complaining about things not going your way, be thankful for what you have. In my book Super Working Mum I talk about putting on our Gratitude Glasses every day. When you view life from a perspective of gratitude, when you are thankful for what you have, you attract more success into your life.

God’s will for us is to always be thankful according to 1 Thessalonians 5:18.

What of when bad things happen, you may ask?

Well, be thankful IN the situation. Be thankful for the opportunity God has to sort out the situation, be thankful for the lessons learnt, be thankful for the victories ahead.

I recommend every morning when you wake or every night before you sleep to write down at least three things you are thankful for in your journal. That will help develop the habit of being thankful.
Habit 3: Meditating on the word of God
This is the “ultimate” habit to form if you want success going forward. Joshua 1:8 is a scripture that supports this:

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

In simple terms meditation is the act of muttering or repeating something over and over in your mind. The more you meditate on the word of God, the more it becomes alive and active in your spirit.

To develop this habit, you have to read your bible on a daily basis, take any verse that jumps out to you and write it out on a Post It note, or type it out on your phone and set as a reminder throughout the day. Prayerfully ask God to give you a fresh meaning of that scripture and reflect over what it means to you.

So those are the three habits I propose you form from today. Experts say it takes about 21 days to form a new habit so I suggest starting with habit 3 for the next 21 days and see what happens. The more you work on habit 3 the easier you will find habit 1 and 2 to do.

Remember, you cannot change your life until you change your habits.

Praying God’s blessings over you in the new year.

Author Spotlight: Super Working Mom by Aloted Omoba

Hi Everyone.

Today on the author spotlight, I have the pleasure of welcoming someone who isn’t new to this blog. She is a woman I admire and I’m so proud of her accomplishments. She is the founder of Super Working Mom and also the author of a new book with the same title. Let me introduce to you…Aloted Omoba. She brought an inspiring excerpt from her book… I have read the whole book and it was more than fantastic. Written in such a way that isn’t wordy but gives you nuggets that can actually be put to use by any woman looking to strengthen her relationship with God and walk in her purpose.

This is an excerpt from Aloted Omoba’s recently published book Super Working Mum, Living and Loving Life to the fullest.

What is “Right” with me?

Have you ever noticed that you are most likely quick to ask “what is wrong with me?” when things seem to go out of your control, or are not going as planned, or is it just me?

Why am I not yet married?

Why is my husband not like so and so?

Why don’t I have children?

Why are my children not behaving properly?

Why is my business not growing?

Why don’t I have a better-paying job?

God, why me?

Does it automatically mean when things are not going your way, something is wrong with you? I don’t think so, because in life, every mum has her fair share of woes.

Many of us grumble when things don’t seem to go our way. Grumbling is certainly not an attractive trait. It will eventually get to a point when your family and friends can’t take your moaning and whining anymore. Even God can’t stand complainers.

Has it ever occurred to you to ask yourself, “What is right with me?” It might seem like a strange question to ask, but if we start focusing on what is right with us, we might have the right attitude towards life, and not think someone is out to get us, or that we have been cursed.

  • You are alive todaysome mum somewhere died in her sleep.
  • You have food to eatso many have nothing to eat.
  • You have a roof over your headsome families have been evicted from their homes.
  • Your husband sits at home, lazing around, watching football after worksome women don’t know where their husbands have been for the past two nights.
  • You can go on holiday when you feel like; you and your husband can travel aroundthose with children need to readjust their plans around school holidays, etc.
  • Your job pays the bills- some people have been searching for a job since they graduated from school

I could go on and on, but I believe my point has been made. This is the real world. Bad times are definitely going to come, but don’t give up hope. Life isn’t fair, as they say, and it owes you nothing. It got here before you!

The good news is that there is light at the end of the tunnel. If only we can change our focus, we would realise this to be true.

I know it is easier said than done, but if we want to be appealing to others around us, we must enjoy life, and maintain a good attitude. We need to be thankful to God for the good He has done, and is doing in our lives.

So next time things are not going according to your plan, don’t ask yourself what is wrong with me? Reframe your mind, ask yourself what is right with me? and focus on the good in your life.
