The Intentionality of Journaling

The dictionary defines intentionality as “the fact of being deliberate or purposive.”

When we want to buy a house we are intentional about making our credit look good. When we want a job we are intentional about how our resume looks and how we prepare for the subsequent interview.

Almost everything we want in life we go about intentionally making sure we do everything in our power to get it. The same applies to our Christian walk. Nobody wakes up and is able to be like Christ no matter how many times they are dipped in the water(baptism)It takes a conscious effort in intentionality to get out there and be the light In The Dark

According to 2 Corinthians 10:5 “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” Obedience to Christ is to follow His commandments and believe in Him. No matter what comes your way, believe in Jesus.

This brings me to today’s post, The Intentionality of Journaling. As we discussed last week a journal helps you share your thoughts through written word, gives you a visual, can be used as testimony( when you see what God has done before). To intentionally capture our thoughts like the verse says, you have to train them.

One Series. Ten Women. Amazing Testimony.

In pursuit of your passion. On your way to destiny. You sometimes, well more often than not, you gotta fly blind. These are those moments of uncertainty where you have no idea which direction you are supposed to go next. Neither do you know how long the darkness will last. What happens when you pray and you’re moving but nothing is happening?

Starting February, every other Monday, I will feature ten amazing women who have a great testimony to share. How did these ladies survive their flashlight moments when they could only see so far #InTheDark . These are women I admire a lot and when I reached out, they willingly answered my call. I can’t wait for you to know them better.

Dikes of Courage In The Dark: An MLK Jnr. Insight.

On Friday I got the kids from aftercare and while we debated on what we wanted for dinner, my daughter blurted out. “Mommy it’s Martin Luther King Day on Monday and we don’t go to school.” I confirmed her statement and informed her and her brother that I had enough snacks to tide us over, all the goodies they liked. After they hollered in gratitude, an awkward silence fell over all of us. Then my daughter spoke again “I think we owe him something., In fact I know we owe him something.”

I sighed and explained, he has a National holiday and we could so some volunteer work. While her and her brother debated, I contemplated her statement and how I was feeling about the current state of the country. If Dr. King Jr was here today, would he be happy or sad. It’s as though we have regressed as a nation and as humanity.

Subsequently I thought about our sojourn here on earth. As the body of Christ, we were instructed to let our light shine. However I feel, rather I know like my daughter expressed, we as Christians are gradually dimming in the darkness of the world. Don’t we owe God more than that? Our faith and hope in Him are a response to His love. However in times of fear or uncertainty are we responding appropriately?  We are called to be witnesses and glorify God in all we do but when waves of uncertainty arise, do we stand strong and glow in His promise or cower to fear and dim the light that is supposed to shine?

This excerpt I found from Dr. King Jnr.’s sermon Antidotes of Fear expressed my sentiments exactly.

Courage faces fear and thereby masters it. Cowardice represses fear and is thereby mastered by it. Courageous men never lose the zest for living even through their life situation is zestless; cowardly men, overwhelmed by the uncertainties of life, lose the will to live. We must constantly build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear.” DR. Marin Luther King Jnr.

We are told countless times in the Bible not to be afraid. We are promised that the Lord our God will not forsake us. Be are also told to be courageous. Therefore #InTheDark areas of life, build your confident expectations on the promises of God. That alone will hold back the flood of fear and give you what is needed to move forward in spite of what you see. Despite our detours or turbulence we must continue to each day “build dikes of courage to hold back fear” by holding on and embracing our season.

Abraham had a 25 year detour.
Paul had a 3 year detour
The Israelites had a 40 year detour.
I could go on and on…
Do you stop to imagine what would’ve happened if they’d left the race midway? On the road to destiny dark moments are a necessity. Fix your eyes on Him in confident expectation of good things to come.

3 Quick Ways to Navigate the Dark

It’s kinda late for me. Gosh it’s almost midnight and I haven’t slept. Before you know it it’s time to go to the day job. But I had to come in here and get this out to you. You know when the fire burns you can’t rest until you put it out. This kinda falls in line with what I wanted to talk about today.

We’re still in the beginning stages of the quarter/year and in my last blog post we talked about  setting goals and getting things in order. We also talked about how things might not always go according to plan.

That happened to me last week. I met one of my goals but life kinda happened and the others fell by the way side and really didn’t go as I intended. So I find myself staying up late today and possibly tomorrow to get a few things done. Why is it so important to me that I would sacrifice sleep?  Simple, I have a destination in mind. Full time entrepreneurship. Now do I know when that is going to happen? Yea and no. I kinda have an idea but I am fully dependent on God and really #InTheDark on when my expected end will get here.

Does that sound familiar to you. There’s something you’re expecting but you have no idea when it would happen. You’re totally #InTheDark but you remain faithful because you confidently expect God to fulfill His promise to you. Remaining faithful in your now while waiting on your next is crucial to reaching your destination. Will it be easy? Of course not but when have you seen anything good come easy? There will be sacrifices you’d have to make and hurdles you’d have to jump.

Obstacles and detours lace the road to fulfilling purpose, pursuing passion/dreams.
Don’t give up until you see what you believe come to pass. So, how do you navigate in the dark?  Here are 3 ways I remain anchored #InTheDark
1.  Recognize the obstacle. They are not always an outside force, YOU can also be the one standing in your own way.
2.  Pick a verse to give you encouragement and affirm it daily through you trial. One of my favorites is Romans 12:12 “rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer,”
3. Be a blessing to others.
No matter what, push through to tap the greatness that lies within.
