On Friday I got the kids from aftercare and while we debated on what we wanted for dinner, my daughter blurted out. “Mommy it’s Martin Luther King Day on Monday and we don’t go to school.” I confirmed her statement and informed her and her brother that I had enough snacks to tide us over, all the goodies they liked. After they hollered in gratitude, an awkward silence fell over all of us. Then my daughter spoke again “I think we owe him something., In fact I know we owe him something.”
I sighed and explained, he has a National holiday and we could so some volunteer work. While her and her brother debated, I contemplated her statement and how I was feeling about the current state of the country. If Dr. King Jr was here today, would he be happy or sad. It’s as though we have regressed as a nation and as humanity.
Subsequently I thought about our sojourn here on earth. As the body of Christ, we were instructed to let our light shine. However I feel, rather I know like my daughter expressed, we as Christians are gradually dimming in the darkness of the world. Don’t we owe God more than that?Our faith and hope in Him are a response to His love. However in times of fear or uncertainty are we responding appropriately? We are called to be witnesses and glorify God in all we do but when waves of uncertainty arise, do we stand strong and glow in His promise or cower to fear and dim the light that is supposed to shine?
This excerpt I found from Dr. King Jnr.’s sermon Antidotes of Fear expressed my sentiments exactly.
“Courage faces fear and thereby masters it. Cowardice represses fear and is thereby mastered by it. Courageous men never lose the zest for living even through their life situation is zestless; cowardly men, overwhelmed by the uncertainties of life, lose the will to live. We must constantly build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear.” DR. Marin Luther King Jnr.
We are told countless times in the Bible not to be afraid. We are promised that the Lord our God will not forsake us. Be are also told to be courageous.Therefore #InTheDark areas of life, build your confident expectations on the promises of God. That alone will hold back the flood of fear and give you what is needed to move forward in spite of what you see. Despite our detours or turbulence we must continue to each day “build dikes of courage to hold back fear” by holding on and embracing our season.
Abraham had a 25 year detour.
Paul had a 3 year detour
The Israelites had a 40 year detour.
I could go on and on…
Do you stop to imagine what would’ve happened if they’d left the race midway?On the road to destiny dark moments are a necessity. Fix your eyes on Him in confident expectation of good things to come.

Yesterday I watched The Butler by Lee Daniels for the first time and I truly enjoyed the movie. But while looking at the part that Dr. King played by Nelsan Ellis I got a little nostalgic, knowing his birthday just passed and the upcoming Monday the WORLD would be celebrating it during this time with Trump potentially moving in the White House. Dark destiny moments were mine a few months ago and I thank God for Hebrews 13:6 and Mark 5:1 and the people He placed in my life, you included. I definitely want the bundle deal but since I can hardly write anymore I’ll pre-order the book.
